How to Export or Save Coda Sites

Where is Coda Site Information Stored?

Coda currently does not have a way to export or save sites like you can using Transmit. But there is a way to save your coda site settings if you need to migrate your site data from one computer to another. You  will need to save a file from your preferences folder.

Save the Coda.plist file:

December 2011 Update:

  1. “For Lion, the Library folder is hidden. To get do it, go to Finder, then at the top menu: Go -> Go to Folder… , and type in: ~/Library”
  2. Then look under: Preferences/com.panic.Coda.plist

May 2012 Update advice by commenter Johnathan:

“in order to not have to reenter all passwords.. You’ll need to copy over the keychain aswell.. You will find it at the same place (the library folder) but in a folder called “keychains”. You don’t need the one with “meta” in its name.”

“you will come to a hidden folder within your users folder (NOT the libraryfolder which also happens to contain a preferences folder”

So make sure that you are looking under the Library folder that is within your Home folder:

I assume this will be added in a future version, but for now you saved me a bunch of copy/paste ;)

    Thanks for sharing!

  12. BennyZen Says:

useful, but passwords for all sites have to be re-entered manually. panic should really think about such an imprt/export feature implemented in a consistent way, optionally including passwords.

  13. Bert Says:

Such a basic task and Coda cripples it. The plist file includes more than just site information and potentially wipes out everything in that Coda install you try to import these sites into. I think serial information are also part of this file.
    This really is crap!

  14. Ben Says:

To transfer your passwords across as well, you’ll need to copy your keychain from the old computer to the new one.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2980?viewlocale=en_US#key

And to transfer the site previews, copy all files across in

    ~/Library/Application Support/Coda

    Done and done!

    thanks!

  16. Ocean Says:

comes the export/import function in the new version
it’s very very basic and complex

    Thanks for the tip!
And thanks for Ben comment too, to transfer the passwords.

Awesome, I was looking all over for that file!

I don´t have any file..?? What should I do?

  20. ReDesigned Says:

This only works if you are MOVING your coda install and using the same serial number / license. It does not work if you are using a second computer and have legitimately purchased a second copy with its own license, or transferring a list of server access info to a fellow worker with their own licese, etc…..Why does Panic include this functionality for Transmit and not for Coda? Users have been requesting it for years. *sighs* Since this is included in Transmit, we have to assume that it isn’t a technical or security issue, but as far as I know despite countless people asking for such a feature Panic still hasn’t given any official reason to its absence. It really makes this tool a pain in the you-know-what to setup when your workflow includes hundreds of clients sites. It is truly a shame.
It’s absence is “wonky” to use their own term.

The only other 3 glaringly missing features are:
    1. regex search and replace against remote files. I *hate* having to fire up Dreamweaver just to do that.
    2. any visual sql client or direct database support.
    3. diff/merge/sync between sites or local and remote.

    Cheers.

To take this tip a step further and use Dropbox to sync Coda settings across several computers (your work computer and your home computer, say?) follow these steps:

  22. Sam Says:

I don’t find any files in those mentioned places on my MacBook Pro (running Lion) or on my new MacBook Air (running Lion). Has something changed in Coda or do I have to do a trick to reveal these files? Any help appreciated… (would love to do the Dropbox trick).

  23. Bento Says:

Same here, replacing the plist file in OSX Lion does not work anymore. I have recently upgraded to Lion and there is not way to get may site credentials and clips onto Lion anymore.

Where do I need to replace the plist or other files to make this work.
This is really a pain in the xxx !

@panic: we need a export/transfer feature in Coda quick!

    Any hints appreciated.

  24. Dan Gayle Says:

Importing Transmit Favorites should also import the passwords. You’re on the same machine, using the same user. Authenticate if you have to, but please don’t make me hunt down all those random passwords again!

    Thanks!

For Lion, the Library folder is hidden. To get do it, go to Finder, then Go -> Go to Folder… , and type in:
    ~/Library

Then copy your .plist file there. I moved from a Snow Leopard computer to Lion and it works fine.

One thing, my remote passwords weren’t saved. I think it’s because they’re stored in Keychain and not the .plist. So good luck with that one….

  26. Palmer Says:

This doesn’t work anymore. I copied the plist from one machine to the other, but the sites are not shown on the second machine.

The lack site/preference import and export would be ridiculous in a version-1 product. At this point it’s inexcusable.

  27. IdentityCrisis Says:

I also have the same problem with Lion. The copy and paste thing is simple. I’ve followed instructions by

    http://uniquemethod.com/backup-your-coda-ftp-sites

    and

    http://sijobling.com/tools/backup-your-coda-sites-ftp/

But it still doesn’t work :( I’ve tried this multiple times but nothing happens. Coda is an excellent product but please don’t make it a pain to reinstall in other computers.

  28. Jonathan Says:

For all of you who says this doesnt work on Lion.. it does, you’re probably looking at the wrong folder.. I know I was.

If you indeed open up finder/go and type in ~Library/ you will come to a hidden folder within your users folder (NOT the libraryfolder which also happens to contain a preferences folder)..

  29. Jonathan Says:

Oh and I forgot to tell you that in order to not have to reenter all passwords.. You’ll need to copy over the keychain aswell.. You will find it at the same place (the library folder) but in a folder called “keychains”. You don’t need the one with “meta” in its name.

  30. admin Says:

Thanks Jonathan! I added the advice to the post.

  31. Zusatzstoff Says:

For those of you running Coda 2 and want to “migrate” to a new machine, don’t forget to copy this folder: ~/library/Application Support/Coda 2/

  32. Chris Says:

Just as an FYI. When you replace the current plist file with the old one, MAKE SURE THAT CODA IS NOT RUNNING. I made this mistake several times and noticed that when I copied my large file over it was reduced to 16KB when I closed and reopened Coda. Then I closed Coda and did it again and now my sites are there.
